On the recommendation of one of my e-course participants, I listened to a talk by Tara Mullarkey yesterday, entitled "Doing What You Love from Where You Love in 2014."
The talk was right up my alley, and shared some great insight on some of subjects that I've discussed here on the blog, time and time again. She reiterated that you can and should spend your life doing what you love and loving what you do, that your dream job doesn't exist--you must create it, and that you CAN make a big work/life transition, but you have to take the steps to make it happen. We've discussed a lot of this already and I'm pretty sure that I've beaten you over the head with this this subject, but, something that I loved that Tara brought up was the question, "What if money wasn't a part of the equation?" In her talk, she asks us to think about the following questions:
She goes on to say that your answers to these questions will help you find out what you really should be doing with your life, with your days, with your energy [If you're not already satisfied with how you're spending your days, of course]. As I thought about my answers to these questions, I was excited to confirm that I am exactly where I should be right now. If I were a millionaire, I would most definitely spend my time yoga-ing/teaching yoga, creating, writing, and connecting. I might have a personal chef and someone who cleaned my house every week, but otherwise, everything else would be basically the same ;) {And that feels so nice to say.} However, I want to remind you that this hasn't always been the case for me. I used to wake up every morning, groggy and uninspired--gulping cups of coffee in order to put a little bit of pep in my step--and then I would put on my work clothes and slog to the subway, weighed down by too many bags over my shoulders, only to sit at a desk all day, hips and lower back aching, doing work on a computer that wasn't fulfilling in the least. I would count down the minutes until the day was over, so that I could go out into the world and actually live my life. Sure, I got pleasure out of some aspects of my various desk jobs, and it wasn't all miserable, but if I were given a million dollars at any point during that time period, I would have handed in my notice that instant, and gone home to paint, do some yoga, and then eat a meal prepared by my personal chef (yay!). So, here's what I want to ask you today--What are your answers to Tara's questions above? What if money wasn't a factor? How would you spend your days? {Once you got over the initial thrill of being able to lounge around in bed all day, watching bad TV and eating cream-puffs, of course.} I promise you, if you take steps towards doing what you really SHOULD be doing (and what you love), the financial part of the equation will figure itself out. You can do it! Three hoorays for you and for living a life worth living! And yay for millionaires and personal chefs! Oh, wait...
