Mary, great finds! The meaning vs. happiness debate is very prevalent in social psychology well-being research, which I delved into for months in prep of my own wellness research. There are two types of well-being in soc psy, subjective well-being which is pretty much happiness. This is what is at the core of positive psychology, however Seligman is now trying to expand pos psy to include "flourishing." The other type of well-being is psychological well-being, which is often misinterpreted to mean mental health and wellness. However, in social psychology it is more akin to having meaning and purpose in life (this is also a popular definition of spirituality). Interesting right? I think findings such as what is discuss in the Atlantic article, it why Seligman and the positive psych people are moving to a more holistic view of well-being. From my work with client, I agree that meaning has more overall value. Happiness is important, but it can also be too forced and superficial if people don't believe they have purpose.
