You knew it was coming, didn't you? We had to talk about yoga at some point, right? Well, here it is, but with a different spin: dudes + yoga. Ben really wanted to discuss this (being a dude who practices yoga) and I thought it was definitely a topic worth getting into (being a yoga teacher who has male students--but not enough!). Thus, here's this week's episode description: Why don't more guys do yoga? In this week's episode, we tackle this subject and more (because really, where are all the dudes?). In the first half of the show, Ben shares what it's like to practice yoga as one of the few men in class, and we discuss some of our theories about why more guys don’t do yoga in the western world. In the second half of the episode, we discuss why more guys should do yoga and how a guy can feel more comfortable taking his first yoga class. Near the end of the show we share some do’s + dont’s for women who want to bring a beginner male companion to class with them. Oh, and here's the YouTube video that I mention in the episode--pretty funny and definitely brings up some of the stereotypes that a lot of people have about yogis :) And while you're at it, if you never watched it, you should definitely watch the Sh*t Yogis Say vid, which also pokes fun at us yogis and brings up some of the things that Ben mentions in this week's episode. I'm a counselor who works primarily with men who have experienced trauma and I have been pushing yoga in sessions for a year and a half with almost no takers! ("You mean that hippie stuff?" is the response I get most often.) I might have to assign this podcast as homework for some people... Ben will be my new hero if he can do a better job of selling it to my clients!!

This episode was fantastic! :) I passed it along to my yoga teacher friend and as a yoga teacher in training, this was super helpful.

Hi Mary Catherine! I listened to this episode over the weekend with my husband (who has been practicing yoga since I started teaching) and we had to press pause more than once to delve into some deeper discussions on the topic. He made an interesting point I wanted to share. He found it fascinating that because yoga is primarily viewed as a "women's world" in our society, men tend to shy away from it. By contrast, most other aspects of life (such as the workplace) are primarily dominated by a "man's world" mentality. We talked at length about this idea, absorbed in the topic, and I was so grateful this episode prompted such a great discussion between the two of us. Just wanted to share his thoughts on the matter! Oh and he's super thankful Ben spoke to the shoulder strain most men experience in down dog because of the lack of hamstring flexibility! He's like, "Yes!! I'm not the only one!!" Thanks again for the compelling topic ;)

Hi Catherine & Ben, Wow! This was wonderful to listen to and learn from. You both are easy on the ears :) As a beginner teacher of yoga, I am very interested in drawing more males into the practice. My first yoga teaching job was teaching teenagers. They had an option to either attend my yoga class or work on computers. Guess what they chose ~ sigh ~ The professor who runs the program couldn't understand why they chose anything but yoga. I suspected why and this podcast confirms my suspensions. Thanks Ben for being so willing and open to discuss a male's perspective. By the way, the wedding pic is absolutely adorable - sorry Ben, I know adorable is too feminine :) Comments are closed.
