Sara is back for her third visit to the show! And we use this opportunity to chat about two different subjects that apply to both of our "adult" lives as of late:
We start with a discussion about making the big decision to move [from a city] and “settle down"--and what that looks like for each of us in our lives right now. We then chat about making friends in a new place when you no longer have built-in social networks around you (like school, a workplace full of colleagues, etc.) and how we each find this challenging in our own ways. To close, Sara gives us a play-by-play on how to approach a potential new friend (for those of us who have a little anxiety around the process ;) You can listen below OR by downloading and/or subscribing in iTunes or Stitcher (be sure you search "Starr Struck Radio").

This was a great podcast and a subject near and dear to my heart. When I first moved to DC, I missed home (Massachusetts) tremendously. It took up until maybe 2 years ago when my husband said we should consider moving back, that I finally realized that DC is now my home. I looked everywhere in Mass, including the beautiful town I grew up in, Mattapoisett, and realized I wasn't meant to live in a small town even though I grew up in one. I have an energy that jives with the city and I like the feeling of not knowing who I'll meet tomorrow and the constant change: I love change! Maybe I'm an anomaly, but for me, living in DC during the school year and spending time (as much as possible) in Mass and Newport during the summer would be ideal. Even though DC is a transient city, I have good friends in the surrounding suburbs that I think are here for good (I hope). Like Sara, I'm a bit of a control freak and my family and I have diverging opinions on a lot of things and I like knowing that I am the only influence in their lives (until they start school anyhow). I'm excited to watch my kids grow up in the capital and to see how their lives and personalities differ from mine, a small town girl.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, Dawn! It's great to hear from someone who kind of feels the opposite of how I do, and just further proves that no one can make this decision for you/your family except YOU {and your partner, if applicable, of course). Appreciate your listening + commenting!

I identify so much with this podcast! Such a refreshing look at making friends as an adult! I find myself feeling so nervous, at 29, reaching out to new people and instead relying on my long-term friendships who live all over the country. Thank you for your honesty!! You two have a great dynamic :) Comments are closed.
