In today's podcast we chat about two totally unrelated but {IMHO} interesting topics:
We start with a discussion of Season 2 of the podcast Serial + the similar TV shows that have popped up around it, and then we jump into a conversation about the etiquette around registries, thank you cards, and gift-giving in general. It's a hodge-podge of opinions (hint: Ben has some strong ones) and murder mysteries, but we think it's a fun one! As always, you can listen below OR by downloading and/or subscribing in iTunes or Stitcher (be sure you search "Starr Struck Radio").

Have you guys listened to "Undisclosed" yet? It's done by 3 lawyers (one of them related to Adnan) and goes way deeper into the investigative process and legal issues that came up in the trial and subsequent appeals.

Hey guys, I am really enjoying the show, so keep up the great work. It's so fun to have a podcast put on by locals, and you both are so articulate. You have a great podcast dynamic! I completely appreciate Mary Catherine's devotion to thank-you notes; however the convo struck a little cord with me. I am the Director of a nonprofit, the owner of a new biz, and a mom to a two year old and a high-energy breed dog. Recently, I decided that "thank you notes" had to give. My family, literally, doesn't even have time to dispose of our garbage, and I am pretty sure my husband averages 4 hours of sleep per night. We of course sent thank-you notes for our wedding gifts and baby gifts, but recently, lots of new customers have been buying us little gifts as well, as a congratulations. (LOTS of owls, I must say). I hope people understand our predicament. Writing out thank you notes simply does not fit into our life right now, but it does not mean we are not grateful. For sanity sake, we just have to use any spare time differently. In fact, the only reason why I can even comment on this right now is because I am traveling for work. I guess I also believe that gift giving should just be that - giving a gift without any expectations on the part of the recipients. That said, I was the recipient of a memorable thank-you note from Mary Catherine, and it was such a kind and thoughtful gesture. It certainly gave me pause (and I loved the tea :) ) Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the kind feedback and great addition to this conversation, Shayna! I think you DEFINITELY get a pass when it comes to thank you cards for your customers--and maybe we should have talked about a situation like this. It was definitely interesting to hear a lawyers perspective on the latest crazes like Serial and Making a Murderer. It's easy for us to listen, or watch, and poke holes in the prosecution on both these cases but there are always two sides to every story. I would be interested in a follow-up to Making a Murderer once you finish watching all the episodes :)

I agree, Amber! So interesting how different Ben's perspective is when compared to all of us non-prosecutors! He gets so mad that I always think everyone is innocent on all of these shows ;) We'll def check back in when we've finished Making a Murderer--we're halfway there now! Comments are closed.
