Mat Matters, Episode 49: Three Fun Side Plank Transitions

9/18/2014

As a yoga teacher who teaches 10-12 classes per week, I often get bored with my own sequencing.  This might be surprising to some, but I doubt it's a novel concept for my fellow yoga teachers.

Sequencing-wise, I do my best to keep things fresh and interesting for both my students and myself, but there are times when I just feel stale and have to look outside of my own knowledge base for inspiration. [It's called a rut, people!]

Let me be clear--the reason that I personally don't like to repeat the same sequences too often is because I want to challenge myself and my students to get out of that 'autopilot' headspace. Clever sequencing does just that for us: It takes us out of our heads and gets us into our bodies, because when you don't know what's coming next, you have to actually pay attention to what the teacher is saying or you'll get lost.

So, this week, I've been trying to mix it up a bit, and as I was preparing my class sequence and thinking about some of my favorite transitions on Tuesday, I was reminded of these fun movements into (and out of) side plank...

Today, I thought I would share them with you, just in case you, too, are looking to mix things up in your classes and/or in your home practice. You may have seen them before, but sometimes a reminder is still helpful ;)

Enjoy!  You can watch here and/or check out my YouTube channel for lots more vids...

Btw, do you have a request for my next Mat Matters video? If so, let me know! I love tailoring these videos to your needs :)

Ah, thank you for these! I'd gotten bored of side plank on its own and wasn't particularly inspired by a side plank with a front leg lift (if that's what it's called...eep!). Can't wait to try these!
