Because Ben and I are hopping on a flight to go skiing out West (with my family--yay!) in a few hours, I thought it only appropriate to post some serious snow art today--snow art made at a ski resort, of course ;) Believe it or not, all of the images in today's post were created by a man walking in the snow, wearing snow shoes. The artist is Simon Beck, an orienting mapmaker, who creates these works by first drawing the designs on paper (using a protractor), and then heading out into the snow, to traverse large, untouched expanses of land for hours--many times, up to 11 or 12 hours--to finish the design in one day. They're pretty incredible images and compositions, and as always, I just love seeing how creativity is manifested in different people's minds. For a orienting mapmaker, of course it makes sense to create art in nature, by walking in snow shoes!? Something that this city girl wouldn't think of in 1,983,726,000 years. What an incredible and interesting endeavor. You can check out some of my favorite works by Simon Beck below, and can see a lot more images (and read more about how he completes these pieces) on his Facebook page. Woweee! These images make me very excited about our trip and about seeing lots of snow later today :)
I've only been skiing once--when I was a child--so have no idea what this trip has in store for me, but as I've been saying to Ben and my family all week, "See you on the Bunny Slope, suckas'!!!!!!!" I'll be sure to take lots of pics and share them with you when I return. Yoga pose pic in the snow wearing skis, anyone? I'll try my best to pull it off ;) Namaste! Mary Catherine
