Over the past few years, one of the things that I've really grown to love is searching for unique vintage and antique paper goods--old books, old sheets of music, old photographs of strangers, old maps, etc. I like to use these items in my mixed media pieces, I like to look at them, I like to feel them, and I like to have them at the ready for when creativity strikes. There's just something about these old objects that makes me feel connected to the past in a special way, and I love discovering beautiful items in a stack of "junk." Thus, on Sunday, I took a long walk to a local consignment shop to replenish my stock. I'm teaching a mixed media workshop tomorrow, so wanted to get some new supplies for the participants. While browsing the shop (a few fun pics are below), I found these vintage flash cards for third graders. I don't know why, but I'm IN LOVE with them. It's something about the combination of the the simple font, the yellowed paper, the dark, black ink, and the power that all of these elements give to the words that are written in the middle of the paper, that just makes me really enjoy looking at them. If you couldn't already tell, you should know that I really adore words (Is that a dorky thing to say?)... Some of my favorite flash cards are below. I hope that after looking at a few of them, you'll be able to better understand my fascination with them. I'm going to use them in my next painting series somehow, I just haven't decided exactly how yet... What creative project would you do with these cards? Do you think I'm crazy for loving them so much? I hope not...

I had to make these when I was in teacher training! They are back in style with all the emphasis on phonics. Now I feel "vintage" too. Great find.

Which shop did you go to? I have one that I like to visit at the intersection of Washington Blvd. and Pershing. I rarely ever buy anything, but love to look!
