I love art that incorporates old maps. I use them a lot in my mixed media pieces, and find that they add both a great pop of color and a sense of nostalgia to a piece, since it's so rare that we use paper maps anymore these days. My love for old maps is what led me to the work of today's featured artist, Claire Brewster. Claire "uses old and out-of-date maps and atlases as [her] fabric to create intricate, delicate, and detailed sculptures and collages." Most of her works are either pinned directly to a wall or held inside of box frames, where they're presented as specimens. Claire is based in London, and as every great life/career change story goes, she left her full-time job in 2000 to pursue creating art, and has become extremely successful since then (yay!). Her work is now shown all over the world and she's been featured in numerous magazines and books (including Vogue!). You can view some of my favorite gorgeous paper sculptures by Claire Brewster below... Oh, to see one of these pieces in person! I bet they're even more incredible when you're only a few inches away.
Love em? You can view more where these came from on Claire's website. Have an ethereal day! Comments are closed.
