Oh my sculpture. These garments are made of stone, peeps. STONE! Do you understand? They have been carved from a large piece of rock! I thought that painting clothing on hangers was hard, but I have a feeling that it's easy peasy compared to carving clothing out of stone. With a chisel? I'm not sure what sort of tools modern sculptors use, but I don't care because this is cray cray. These incredible sculptures are the creations of Alasdair Thomson, a Scotland-based sculptor whose current series is based on "exploring the way fabric hangs and folds" and "attempting to capture that lightness and gracefulness in stone." I'd say he's succeeded in meeting his goals, wouldn't you? Lets take a look at a few more of the pieces from his clothing collection, entitled the "Identity Collection:" Each one of these sculptures is a copy of a piece of clothing that belonged to one of his friends or family members. Thomson "surrendered control of the content of the series by allowing others to submit garments of their choosing for him to carve," which in my mind, is super brave (I want to pick the items that I will recreate through art!).
Are you, too, blown away by Thomson's work? You can view more where these came from on his website and/or on Instagram, where you can take a peek at some of his works-in-progress (amazing to see!). So much beauty in the world, you guys! I love it. Comments are closed.
