When people hear surrealism, they often think bizarre, weird, crazy--Dali, melting clocks, lifesize ants milling about in the desert. And although, yes, this is definitely one branch of surrealism, I find that I'm much more drawn to a new brand of surrealism that is being created [right now!] by modern artists. For instance, today's featured artist, Kylli Sparre (who goes by the professional name "Sparrek"), has created a modern fantasy world that I can get really behind. A professional ballet dancer who, after years of training, decided to change paths and take up photography, instead, Sparrek is a lady who seems to follow her dreams further than most. Not only has she wholeheartedly embraced her passions and created a new life for herself through her art, but she also creates dream-like images within her work, as well. Using photography and image manipulation, she creates symbolic, surrealistic works of art that come from her "thoughts, experiences, and observations." And wow, are they incredible. You can view some of my favorite pieces by Sparrek are below... When I first came across these images, I didn't know that Sparrek had a dance background, but was drawn to the fluidity of the figures in her work. Now that I know she was a professional dancer for years, it makes even more sense that there is so much emotion captured within these [often faceless] figures.
Can't you see her love of dance and movement in each of these compositions? So beautiful. If you, too, enjoy Sparrek's work, you can view more images on her website, her Facebook page, or her Flickr portfolio. There are many, many more amazing works where these came from, so I encourage you to take a peek ;) Here's to following your dreams into the unknown! Comments are closed.
