Okay, so today's artist is really special. I mean, really. What she is creating is so out of the box, so unique, that it's got me very, very excited. First, lets start with her "sewnnews" series. She's basically taken various editions of The New York Times, sewn the entire paper into a sleeve of cotton muslin, and embroidered the main image onto the fabric. Totally normal idea, right? She says that she usually selects a photograph from the paper that is "a strong image suggestive of power, leadership or communication," and when she embroiders this image, she applies the colors "in a painterly way" by layering the line and thread. You'll notice in the pieces below that she also chooses to leave some of the threads unsewn, hanging from the fabric in an interesting and often very fluid or meaningful way. Oh, and I was so excited by her work that I forgot to mention the artist's name! It's Lauren DiCioccio, and I think you'll be very impressed by what she's doing (I obviously am!)... I've included some of my favorite "sewnnews" pieces below: Pretty cool, isn't it? And that's not all that she has sewn...some of my favorite pieces from another one of her series, "Recology," are below: And her National Geographic series (also completely sewn) is pretty incredible: Okay, after this I promise I'll stop, but here are just two more amazing pieces from her "Recology" series--both completely made of fabric and thread! Simply fabulous. This girl = big fan of DiCioccio. You can view lots more of her work on her website, here.
Don't you just love it when someone can find beauty and interest in everyday objects--or even among heaps of trash (what she did in creating her Recology series)? It's a great reminder to look a little closer and pay more attention to our surroundings, no matter where we are in life... Namaste! Mary Catherine Comments are closed.
