It's been a cloudy, rainy, foggy week here on the Cape thus far, and everything looks a little bit more atmospheric--softer and blurrier than usual. So, it's no surprise that I felt drawn towards Derrick Breidenthal's landscapes this week, as they're some of the most atmospheric paintings I've ever come across. Even though his work is abstracted, you can see and feel the scene in each image. You've been there before, you know what the landscape looks like, with the horizon line or city or train in the distance, and while some of his paintings are kind of haunting or sad, others are bright and inspiring. Somewhere in the middle, we find total beauty--gorgeous colors, brushwork, blending, and a rugged yet refined (his words, not mine) nod to rural America. I feel it when looking at them, do you? You can check out some of my favorite pieces by Breidenthal below... Ugh! They're so amazing! There's just something about these paintings that gets me...
If you, too, like what you see, you can view more work by Derrick Briedenthal on his website. Embrace the grey days, everyone! As you can see, there is beauty to be found in the fog, the rain, and the mist ;)
