Today's featured artist, Jane Perkins, is defined by her love of the found object, of reusing materials, of giving items a second life. She creates her masterpieces from tiny little knick knacks that she picks up at thrift stores, the local recycling center, and yard sales, and uses "anything of the right size, shape or color: toys, shells, buttons, beads, jewelry, curtain hooks, springs etc. No color is added to these items--everything is used exactly as found." I'm crazy impressed by her work not only because it is incredibly unique, whimsical, and fun, but also because of the skill that it takes to make reproductions. I painted many a copy over my years studying art in school, and let me tell you, they are challenging (!), so I cannot imagine making such a spot-on reproduction out of plastic animals, buttons, and beads... To understand how fabulous Perkins' work is, you just need to take a look for yourself: Pretty wild, huh? Modern-day impressionism at it's craziest and best ;)
