Since Ben and I are going to be hitting the open road (er, super crowded East Coast highways...)--in both our UHaul and our Subaru--on Saturday, I thought it only appropriate to share a selection of photographs from a series entitled "On the Road" today. These photographs are the work of Valerie Chiang, a [young!] LA-based photog whose work captures gorgeous images of "quiet places throughout the Southwest." She says that "some of these buildings lie on the outskirts of once-thriving towns and are truly abandoned, while others are located right in the middle of places with thousands of inhabitants - not quite abandoned, but seemingly so." Something about the stillness and the loneliness of these images caught my eye, but I also love the open spaces, the sense of nostalgia, the combination of muted, natural tones vs. bright red paint and neon signs, and the road-trip vibe that these photographs have captured. Okay, let me stop here before my emotions get the best of me and I go on and on about the sadness and emptiness of these images (this move has got me *slightly* moody this week), and lets take a look at some of Valerie's incredible work, instead: Woah. I simply love it. You can view more of Valerie's work on her website and/or her blog.
See you on the "open road" on Saturday! Can you guess who is driving the UHaul and who is driving the car? One hint: the UHaul driver will be listening to Top 40 while driving... ;) |
