Today's featured artist, Valerie Roybal, isn't afraid of layers; In fact, she embraces them. In her words:
Much of my work consists of layered surfaces: bits and pieces from discarded books and magazines, handwritten letters and receipts, obsolete reference material, thrift store textiles, and mysterious random pieces. Order, association, and reverence emerges from the sorting, arranging, and placement of each accumulated piece into a whole. I love the idea that order emerges through her creative process--that she is able to find organization and meaning through all of these found objects, as she layers one material on top of another. Not to get too far into this (or all crazy on you), but it kind of sounds like life--many layers, collected from all of our random experiences, from everywhere that we go, from everything that we do, that eventually (hopefully!), create some kind of order and meaning... And with that, lets take a look at some of Roybal's gorgeous pieces of art: Comments are closed.
