As you know, I don't often feature printmakers on the blog. The reason for this is pretty simple: as a painter, I'm mostly drawn to paintings, or to work that has a painterly feel. It's what I know, it's what I love, and it's what I understand. That being said, I've been very interested in paintings of buildings and cityscapes lately--not sure why, but it's happened (again, you may have noticed)--so when I came across Chris Turnham's prints of LA architecture, I was intrigued and wanted to see more. Turns out Turnham is an extremely talented illustrator, animator, and printmaker, and he has an entire series devoted to the wide variety of architectural styles found in Los Angeles. I've never been to LA, but when I look at these screenprints, I get a feel for the mood, the vibe, and the look of the city, which I think he has captured in a very simple and unique way. Oh, and crazy enough, due to the process of screenprinting (which involves layering colors on top of one another, one at a time), each of these prints are only created using only 6 or 7 colors, tops. That's pretty incredible, if you ask me (someone who uses at least 50 colors in every painting). Lets take a look at some of Turnham's work! I think I am drawn to these prints simply because the process, the colors, and the scenes depicted in each piece are SO foreign to me, and so different from anything that I've ever created. This is why I love art--the possibilities are endless, and every person brings something completely new to the conversation.
You can view more of Chris Turnham's work on his website, and can purchase prints of these pieces in his online shop. Comments are closed.
