Somehow, I just realized that I've never shared my love for Kelly Reemsten's work with you. How could I have forgotten to do so? Unacceptable. So, today is Kelly Reemsten day, aka, Desperate Housewives: The Paintings (I made up this title, but I think it's fairly appropriate). Reemsten is an LA-based artist whose work is focused on painting women in party dresses, holding gardening tools . Although her work is colorful, bright, and fun at first glance, I believe that there's a darker side to it, as many of the tools could be fairly dangerous if you wanted them to be... Take a look below and see what you think: Interesting, huh? I absolutely ADORE her colors, her style (reminds me of my fave, Wayne Thiebaud), and her subject matter (clothes, hello!!!), but I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I think she's saying. Would you agree that some of the pieces (chain saw, ax?) seem fairly dark, and yet others (garden hose and bubbles) are much more lighthearted? Either way, you can see more of her work on her website, here, and come to your own conclusions. Her entire body of work, when seen with the images of women falling and pills & candy, makes me thing she's saying a bit more here... Namaste! Mary Catherine I saw some of these in Sonsie Restaurant in Boston last month. I really loved them... especially the chainsaw one. I don't see them as dark at all - more of an unexpected juxtaposition of absolute femininity contrasted with masculine tools. I think they say "I am completely woman but I can still do anything a man can do" Comments are closed.
