As a painter, I love to paint the objects that surround me in my everyday life, and as you've probably seen (at least here, if not elsewhere!), many artists have a similar interest in bringing a new life to the normal, or the mundane. However, every once in a while I come across an artist who is taking this idea to a whole new level; meet today's featured artist, Allison Freeman. Some might scoff at her subject matter, or be completely confused by her interest in painting boring office documents, interoffice envelopes, and pages out of phone books, but I think there's a real beauty to what she's doing--especially when her body of work is viewed as a whole--and I want to see more. Formulate your own opinion by taking a look at a selection of her paintings below (and try not to let all of the documentation stress you out!)... So what do you think? Boring because you stare at papers like this all day long, or interesting because once you look closer, they don't actually say or mean anything, but are made up of marks that we're all used to seeing and recognizing as the marks of work, of business?
All I can say is that I love artists who think outside of the box--and Freeman definitely does ;) You can view more of her work on her website, here. I hope these are the only "boring" documents that you have to view today... Namaste! Mary Catherine Comments are closed.
