As you all probably know, I don't share abstract art often. In fact, although I do really enjoy it (I'm a big fan of all colors and shapes, whether they're arranged in a recognizable pattern or not!), I find that it can be hard for people to connect over abstract art, as it's so subjective, personal, and individualized. Usually, if two people are looking at representational art, even if they don't love the piece, they can discuss the skill, the meaning, the artists' vision. But I find that when I'm with those who aren't as familiar with looking at art, abstract art can stop the conversation. Which is why I tend to stay away from sharing it on the blog. Unless it really speaks to me. Like today's artist. I first came across Lola Donoghue's work when her shop was recently featured on the Etsy Blog, and I was immediately drawn to the painting above. The colors were soothing, arranged in a way that felt really wonderful to me, they made me think of spring, and happiness, and made me want to just look at it and smile. Or wear it. I couldn't decide. So anyways, I obviously had to share some of Lola's work with you today. Some my favorites by this very talented artist are below... Interestingly enough, her work doesn't start out as an abstract painting; "My paintings are captured moments of past experiences. However, when I begin, I never know what the finished piece will look like. The initial trigger is merely a springboard for my imagination; a vehicle for my creative urges. It is an emerging process. As the work unfolds, I may discover something by accident, which in turn dictates the direction of the piece. A representational piece usually ends up in total abstraction." They just make you want to stop and stare a while, don't they?
And here's something that I love just as much as these paintings--what Lola says about creating art: Why do I create art? I want to connect with people. I want to express my emotions. I want to evoke reactions and emotions in others. I want to become a famous artist. I could list a hundred of these plausible answers, and yes, the truth is it could be any of these, on any given day. I’ve given up asking myself questions like these. One thing I do know is that there is a compulsion there; a need to create. Painting seems to be what fulfills this inherent need in me. I got an email this morning from a girl who just bought one of my pieces. It read, “I think looking at this painting is going to make me very happy.” There’s as good a reason as any to do what I do. Couldn't have said it better myself. You can view more of Lola's work in her two Etsy shops, Lola Donoghue and Art by Lola (where she sells her equally-gorgeous fashion illustrations). Namaste!
