Happy Monday, everyone!

As you all know by now, I've been pretty obsessed with getting organized in 2013. Last week I shared my first "de-cluttering project," my painting studio, so this week I thought there would be no better way to start off a Monday morning (wah, wah...) than to share my latest project & one of my main focuses over the past weekend, our "dining area." I call it our dining area, but honestly, it's become our most-used "room" in the apartment, and has also taken on the role of my office, Ben's telework office, our storage unit, and our kitchen spillover area. Fun, right?

Since getting married in October and receiving lots of *wonderful* household gifts, our cabinets, floors, and corners have slowly filled with boxes of serving bowls, wine glasses, pots & pans, and other much-needed, yet very large items. Thus, our need for some major shelving and storage options (to get everything off of the floor!) and a major revamp of this multi-use room.

So, this past weekend we got to work! Take a look below for some fun "before" and "after" shots of this space...

BEFORE
Picture
Unused wall space, and you can just get a glimpse of Ben's "kettlebell collection" on the floor along the wall...

Wine glasses out in the open (collecting dust), stacks on the floor, crowded bar/countertop.

More stacks on the floor and office/paperwork clutter...

DURING

AFTER
Don't you love seeing the clean floors? You have NO idea how happy this organization makes me ;)

Images of two more little household projects are below:

Ben's pet project--he REALLY wanted to get rid of our crowded spatula/serving utensil jar...

BEFORE

AFTER
Ahhhhhhh...de-cluttering never felt so good. Oh, and btw, I received a GREAT piece of organization advice from a reader last week:

I've been using sticky post-it notes all over my house as reminders to "encourage" myself to organize certain
areas :). They say things like, Task: Closet. Remove all clothing items no longer worn. Helpful Hint: Organize into named piles, Never Worn, Sentimental, Keep, etc. Hopefully this will help keep me on track!

Genius, isn't it? Thanks, Kristy! I think I may do the same thing around my house, as it can be easy to forget about organizing projects as January slips away...

I hope that you, too, can find a way to make small--yet important--changes in your life this week.

Namaste!
Mary Catherine

The before/after pictures are a great idea - I've never thought of doing that for my own organizing, but it might motivate me to tackle some projects. I also relate to the piles on the floor... it's better than total chaos, maybe, but they irritate me, too. Also, I let myself off the hook on a project a few weeks ago and really learned from it... I've avoided organizing my closet altogether because I really jammed 2-3 tasks into one, insisting that I must identify the give-aways, get them out of the house on the same day, AND do a complete re-org of the closets. So instead I decided to commit to re-organizing with no obligation to give anything away. I got the job done, sure enough, and I found myself starting a give-away pile just because I felt like doing it, and it was easy. I'm letting go of some super duper high expectations, and it's working!

Thanks for your comment, Lora! SOOOO true that if we let go of our super high expectations, things often come together much easier :) Thanks for sharing and reading! xo
